Job Summary
The Visiting Research Lab Technician will be responsible for a variety of laboratory tasks to support research in a recently funded project to develop genetic tools for anaerobic microorganisms. These duties will include research management and co-ordination, maintenance of the project strain collection and equipment, preparation of media, and support of staff scientists. Additional duties will include cultivation of strictly anaerobic microbes, preparation of biological samples and assisting in genetic experiments. Duties & Responsibilities
  • Coordination and technical maintenance of the strain collection and their genetic derivatives require accurate curation as well as balanced laboratory and organizational skills. This includes calendar co-ordination and management/shipping of strains across multiple international research groups that are partners on this proposal.
  • Phenotypic growth experiments of selected strains for medium optimization and antibiotic resistance assays. Application of routine recombinant DNA techniques.
  • Maintaining the culture collection with storage using cryopreservation.
  • Undertake entry and analysis of the above data.


Additional Physical Demands
The work is laboratory based within the Institute for Genomic Biology Minimum Qualifications

Master's Degree in chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology or animal sciences; and documented experience working in a research laboratory.
Preferred Qualifications

Master's Degree in chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology or animal sciences with a focus on the study of anaerobic microbiology; documented experience of working for a minimum of 3 years in a microbiological research laboratory; and experience working with fermentation and recombinant DNA techniques would be highly desirable.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Background in microbiology preferably involving anaerobes.
  • Excellent organizational and logistical skills in order to maintain and curate the reference collection of anaerobic bacteria and methanogens.
  • Ability to work independently, but also as part of a team including willingness to learn and support others in the team.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with others.
  • Ability to maintain written and electronic records, including knowledge of record keeping and reporting software.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Visiting Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the close date. The budgeted salary range for this position is $50,000 to $60,000. The pay offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors including (but not limited to) experience and qualifications of the selectedcandidate.
