The employee with the greatest amount of continuous “local work location” seniority in the class shall be selected over other employees and notified of start date. If there are no local bidders, then the selection criteria above in “Who May Apply” will be utilized.   The Post and Bid Request form, SHR 207 is combined with the duty statement.

The California Science Center seeks a Plumber to support the Plant Operations Unit. This is an exciting opportunity to join our team at the California Science Center (CSC), a world-class science museum, that develops and features award-winning exhibits and internationally renowned education programs. The Science Center's workforce includes executive, managerial, supervisory, and administrative classifications, however, rank and file facility maintenance and skilled trades represent approximately fifty-one percent (51%) of its civil service workforce.

Under the direction of the Supervisor of Building Trades, the Plumber I is a journey-level position that performs the installation, maintenance, inspection, and repair of standard plumbing equipment concerned with water, gas, oil, sewage, fire control, steam, refrigeration, and irrigation systems. The incumbent troubleshoots plumbing systems; installs and repairs pumps; maintains the plumbers shop; makes rough sketches and estimates labor and materials for minor plumbing installation and repair; advises in the selection, ordering, and storage of plumbing supplies and equipment; consults with other tradespeople; keeps simple records and makes reports; and may instruct and lead unskilled assistants.

Special Requirements

The selected candidate will be required to submit to pre-employment hiring clearances which include the following: Department of Justice Livescan fingerprint and medical testing for tuberculosis and complete physical, within three business days of receipt of a conditional offer of employment.

• Ability to use tact and good judgment while communicating and working with customers, co-workers, management, and other government agency representatives.

• Strong interpersonal skills and experience working in a team environment.

• Ability to operate various motorized equipment and vehicles such as pipe threaders, drain cleaning machines, trenches, and service trucks.

• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety regulations, plumbing codes, installation instructions, blueprints, and procedure manuals related to plumbing systems and fixtures.

• Ability to work within demanding time frames.

• Ability to get along with others and maintain a positive attitude.

• Able to work independently.

• Ability to handle multiple programs or projects.

• Knowledge of the Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC) and applicable provisions of the Uniform Building Code (UBC) as they relate to plumbing installations and systems.

• Knowledge of building systems, and understanding of water distribution, drainage, and venting systems.

Reinstatement Eligibility – Previously obtained permanent employment with the State of California in the same classification or in a classification that is comparable.
